One useful idea for helping to prevent viruses causing problems on your computer is o examine program behaviour and o block or at least query those behaviours which appear suspicious. ThreatFire is supposed to complement your existing anti-virus software by performing this behaviour check for you so as to hopefully block those viruses that your regular anti-virus doesn’t yet recognise. I have recently checked this program out and here’s what I think of it.

What are the latest viruses to cause people problems on the web? What were the biggest virus problems last month? Which are the most popular hoaxes currently confusing people about what are and are not viruses? This web page that I added to the site back in 2002 las live feeds from one of the major antivirus software producers to answer those questions for you.

I have been using the free antivirus from AVG on my computers for a while now. Just recently they started displaying nag screens about buying their new version 8 security suite. A couple of days ago I found out that the paid version 8 wasn’t the only new release and decided to download the free version 8 to take a look.
All I can say is what a terrible job that they have done as I ended up wasting about 10 hours attempting to install this new program only to end up having trouble finding a copy of the old program (the one that actually works) to reinstall in place of the new mess.
I guess part of the problem is the range of operating systems that I run with some older versions as well as newer ones.

Yesterday my ISP blocked my internet access for a couple of hours when their automated spam blocker somehow misidentified my connection as having been sending spam. The ISP did not of course accuse me of sending spam, their block page suggested that it would have actually been caused by a virus or spyware having got installed on my system and that this was the most likely source of the spam. Their block page also offered free antivirus and antispyware software for download so that you could use the time you were blocked in scanning your system to find and remove the problem.
I didn’t need their download links because I already have a full range of security software installed on all my computers and the antivirus software had already brought itself completely up to date before the block started.
